The Leading Precious Metal Mints & Refiners in the World

Synopsis

Precious metal production and refining is an essential process. This article provides an overview of some of the world’s leading mints and refiners, including The Royal Mint. By the end, you’ll be familiar with the major names in precious metals and feel confident that the products you purchase from Chards Coin and Bullion Dealer are of the highest quality.

Where does Gold and Silver come from?

Whether it's a bar or coin, the supply chain of gold and silver starts at a mine. But this is only the start of the journey, as precious metals go through various processes before they arrive at a refiners or mint – and that’s where we come in.

There are many refineries and mints in the world and we stock a significant number of products issued by some of the most notable ones and at Chards we are careful in ensuring quality and authenticity of our products. These include Government Mints like The Royal Mint and Private Mints like the Bulmint, as well as London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) accredited refiners like Metalor.

The Importance of Mint and Refiner Reputation

Before purchasing any precious metals, it's essential to research which mint or refiner produced the coins or bars. The reputation of the producer plays a key role in determining the quality and authenticity of the product. By choosing bullion from trusted manufacturers, you can invest with confidence, knowing your investments meet industry standards and are widely traded across the market.

The Royal Mint

The Royal Mint, founded over 1,000 years ago, is one of the oldest and most celebrated mints in the world. It is the official mint of the United Kingdom and is fully owned by the government. With its long-standing history and reputation for producing premium products, The Royal Mint is a trusted and respected name in precious metal refining.

Investors may best know The Royal Mint for manufacturing gold Sovereigns, Britannias, and a variety of other annual UK bullion coins. UK investors often choose Royal Mint coins for the tax-efficient benefit of Capital Gains Tax exemption, meaning you won’t pay tax on profits exceeding £3,000 per annum.

In addition to bullion production, The Royal Mint also produces a wide range of collectable coins. These include proof and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) editions, which can be professionally graded by expert numismatists at companies such as NGC and PCGS.

The South African Mint

The South African Mint, operating under the umbrella of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), holds a distinguished position as Africa's leading producer of legal tender circulation coins, bullion, commemoratives, and other numismatic products. When discussing its range, it’s impossible not to begin with the gold Krugerrand. With over 60 million ounces sold, the Krugerrand remains the most widely traded and trusted gold bullion coin in the world.

As an authorised distributor of The South African Mint, we’re proud to offer customers a consistent supply of Krugerrand bullion coins. The production of each Krugerrand would not be possible without the Rand Refinery, a privately owned facility specialising in the refining and smelting of precious metals.

The Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint was established in 1908 and is responsible for producing all of Canada’s circulation coins. Initially, the Ottawa branch of the Mint was listed as a branch of The Royal Mint and was used to produce gold Sovereigns.

Today, the Mint manufactures coins, medals, and medallions in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Its most popular coin release is the Maple Leaf bullion coin. The Gold Maple Leaf was first minted in 1979 with a fineness of 0.999, making it the first coin to be struck in 24-carat gold. However, after just three years of production, in 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint increased the fineness to 0.9999, making it the world’s first 0.9999 bullion coin at the time.

Maple leaves are the official symbol of Canada, which has helped make Maple Leaf coins some of the most recognisable bullion coins worldwide. The Mint also produces Silver Maples and Platinum Maples, and previously minted Palladium Maple Leafs.

The Austrian Mint

The Austrian Mint in Vienna followed suit from the Royal Canadian Mint, South Africa Mint and Royal Mint, minting its first Philharmonic gold bullion coin in 1989. Its design celebrates the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, hence the name The Vienna Philharmonic coin, more commonly known as The Philharmonic or Philharmoniker, and sometimes shortened to Phil(s).

Since Austria adopted the euro in 2002, the face value of the 1oz Gold Philharmonic was changed to €100, making it the only European gold bullion coin with legal tender status. The Mint also produces silver Philharmonic coins, which are the most minted silver bullion coins in Europe and among the most widely traded globally.
