Gold and silver investors tend to use the troy ounce as the unit of measure. For ease, this is abbreviated to "ounce" on the charts but it should be noted that the troy ounce is not the same as the avoirdupois ounce and in fact is 3 grams heavier at 31.1035g. The origin of the troy weight system is unknown although there is speculation that it is linked to Champagne fairs at Troyes in France. A second hypothesis is that the troy system is in fact of Muslim origin by way of the Gold Dirhem. Do get in touch if you have any more information on the source of the weight system as we would like to know more! We offer grams, kilograms and troy ounce as options so you can use the graphs to fit your budget and even the items you wish to buy or sell.
