Investment Strategies: How to Get the Most Value for Your Money

Synopsis

Investing in bullion is a good strategy for portfolio diversification and inflation protection, but it's important to consider tax implications, such as Capital Gains Tax (CGT) in the UK. CGT-exempt options include gold sovereigns and Britannias from The Royal Mint and coin issues that are considered UK Legal Tender, such as the very recent Royal Mint Dracula coin series or even the Freddie Mercury Music Legends Silver Proof. It's also vital to keep an eye on bullion pricing and market trends and of course, a good deal of research in financial articles. They do give contrasting opinions but they can be very valuable when investing. Finally, you should also consider any changes to CGT laws. With the budget coming in November, this is something to consider. By doing research, one can make informed decisions and have confidence in their bullion investments.

What Are CGT-Exempt Options for UK Investors?

Investing in bullion is a prudent strategy for those seeking to expand or increase their portfolio and safeguard their wealth against inflation. However, it is imperative to ensure that you are obtaining the most value for your money, and that includes taking into account tax implications. For many investors, this is potentially one of the most important things to consider. In the UK, Capital Gains Tax (CGT) can have a considerable impact on bullion investments. Particularly when you have made a profit on your original investment value. Fortunately, there are options that are CGT-exempt and this could save you thousands of pounds.

If you are a UK investor, gold sovereigns offer a perfect option for CGT exemption. Issued by The Royal Mint, they are considered UK Sterling legal tender, which means they have a denomination and if you buy and then sell at a profit, you will not pay capital gains tax on that profit. Additionally, gold, silver, and platinum Britannias are also CGT-exempt. Most recently, due to investor demand, there has been a shortage, with the Royal Mint struggling to keep up with demand. However, this will eventually even out, making these coins an excellent selection for investors looking to incorporate bullion as part of their investment strategy. The gold sovereign and Britannias also don't attract VAT.

What Are the Types of Bullion Available?

When contemplating an investment in bullion, it is essential to comprehend the different types of bullion available. Gold, silver, and platinum are the most prevalent options, and each possesses unique characteristics and advantages. For instance, gold is widely regarded as a safe haven during times of economic uncertainty, whereas silver is more accessible and affordable for many investors. Although it is also extremely volatile and the gains will potentially be smaller. Platinum, on the other hand, is rarer and is frequently utilised in industrial applications, making it more susceptible to supply and demand. All three have seen considerable price increases in 2025, with silver most recently being added to the critical minerals list in the U.S.

Who Are Reputable Dealers and Sellers?

To ensure that you are obtaining the most value for your money, it is crucial to source reputable dealers and sellers. At Chards Coin and Bullion Dealer we are one of the UK's premier online and retail bullion dealers, with a reputation for providing high-quality bullion products and outstanding customer service. Our values have always been about being honest, ethical and transparent with pricing. This is why we show our premiums on all of our products and are very clear on our postage. Many dealers offer 'free postage' but this is simply added to the product premium, so if you were to purchase 50 Britannias, you'll pay that postage addition 50 times over. We simply give you one price for your total order. To see how we often compare with other dealers, take a look at our precious metals price comparison article. You will see just how we fair against 'free postage' bullion dealers.

It is also essential to keep abreast of bullion pricing and market trends. The price of bullion is determined by various factors, including supply and demand, economic conditions, and political events. Monitoring current market trends can assist in making informed purchasing decisions. Recently, I created a Chards You Tube video about the current market trends (October 2025), which may be of use to investors looking for answers. While I can't offer a guaranteed future prediction, I do give an opinion based upon my 60 years plus now as a bullion dealer.

What Are the Changes to CGT Laws?

The UK government have claimed there are currently no final changes to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exemptions. However, there has been significant speculation about potential changes, including to CGT exemptions and reliefs, to raise revenue for the government. Whether this happens or not remains to be seen. At present the following applies (retrieved from the HMRC).

  • Annual Exempt Amount (AEA): The tax-free allowance is currently £3,000 for individuals and personal representatives, and £1,500 for most trustees. This amount has already been significantly reduced from £12,300 in recent years.
  • Main Residence Exemption: Gains from selling your primary and only home are generally exempt from CGT.
  • Other Exemptions: Various other assets and situations are exempt, including assets transferred to a spouse or civil partner, gains on ISAs and UK government bonds (gilts), and personal possessions (chattels) worth less than £6,000.
