Early History of the Pillar Dollar

Pillar dollars also known as "pieces of eight" were first minted in the Spain Empire from 1732-1771. It was used as the first international currency, used by Europe, Americas, and the Far East.

How Did Governor Macquarie Address the Ongoing Shortage?

Governor Macquarie brought 40,000 Spanish coins called 'reales' into the colony. To solve a money shortage, he had them punched in the middle.

The outer rings became 'holey dollars' and the centres were called 'dumps'. This clever idea doubled the number of coins and helped keep money in the colony.

Obverse

The obverse features Dan Thorne's effigy of His Majesty King Charles II. The coin also includes an inscription around the portrait that reads as follows:

 CHARLES III AUSTRALIA ·

1 oz 9999 Au 100 Dollars

Reverse

The reverse of the coin features the Spanish Pillar Dollar. The design shows the Spanish crown above two hemispheres, symbolising the Old World and the New World. Surrounding these elements are the Pillars of Hercules, bearing the inscription:

PLVS VLTRA

The design also includes a 'MO' mintmark, indicating the coin was minted in Mexico City, and is completed with the issue date '2025'.

Produced by The Perth Mint, these enhanced coins are limited to only 10,000 coins
