We are often astounded at the number of people who can't spell. We can just about understand ordinary people mis-spelling the word sovereign as soveriegn, but we can't believe how many "experts" manage to make the same mistake. A quick search on Google showed 4,120 pages with the word "soveriegn", compared with 824,000 with the correct spelling "sovereign". We decided to carry out the same research on the plural, i.e. "soveriegns" instead of "sovereigns". This gave 115 pages compared with 60,300. One of these pages made us smile more than usual because it contained two mis-spellings in its title which was shown as "Soveriegns of Sciotland - The History of Scotland". It would not give us much confidence in the author's ability to provide an accurate history of his subject as not only did he mis-spell the word sovereign, but also managed to mis-spell Scotland.
We notice that we are coming across even more mis-spellings on eBay listings. Could it be that a large number of eBayers are semi-literate?
