With the first Shilling coin being issued during the reign of Edward VI in 1549, the silver Shilling is said to have derived from the value of a sheep in the anglo-saxon era, equating to 12 pence.

Interestingly the shilling coin was the first piece of British coinage to bear a date on the design. The shilling enjoyed circulation until being superseded in 1968 by the new 5 pence coin as preperation started for the decimalisation movement.
