Issued in the town of Newark whilst King Charles I and his Royalists were under siege from Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarian army.
Struck in sterling silver.
This 1645 silver shilling was issued as emergency money during a 5 month period in 1645/46 whilst King Charles I and the Royalists were in the town of Newark under siege from the Parliamentarian army. The coins were struck in a diamond / lozenge shape and were produced from silver tableware and other decorative objects found in the castle.
This coin has been plugged. Spink reference number 3142/3143.
The obverse bears a large crown with the initals C R, the Roman numerals XII and some decorative beading around the edge.
The reverse features the lettering OBS: NEWARK and the year 1645.
