William of Orange had married Mary Stuart and had reigned as co-regnal monarchs until her death in 1694. William III continued to rule as King for a further 8 years. During William III’s rule the Declaration of Rights was signed which marked a major change in the course of British parliamentary history. The declaration was principally an assertion of the rights of Parliament in its relations with the Crown and effectively confirmed a shift in the balance of power from the Crown to Parliament.

The Declaration of Rights encompasses the Bill of Rights and Claim of Right which ensure free and regular elections, freedom of speech in Parliament, the proper distribution of governmental power and protection of the rights of subjects. These principals of which are still used by British parliamentary government and by other countries around the world.

Obverse

The obverse bears the third draped laureate portrait of William III facing right by engraver James Croker. The obverse features the legend:

GVLIELMUS· III·DEI·GRA

This translates to:

WILLIAM III By the Grace of God

Reverse

The reverse displays the four crowned cruciformed shields with the Lion of Nassau at centre. The coin bears the legend:

MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX 1697

The Latin legend translates to King of Great Britain, France and Ireland.
