The obverse of this sovereign bears the veiled head portrait of Queen Victoria, known as the Old Head. This portrait was designed by the sculptor, Thomas Brock, his initials T.B. are set below the truncated neck. The sovereign features the inscription VICTORIA·DEI·GRA·BRITT·REGINA·FID·DEF·IND·IMP·
The reverse features the iconic St George and the Dragon engraving by Benedetto Pistrucci. The S mint mark in the line of the ground below the dragon denotes that the sovereign was minted in Sydney. The date and the engraver's initials B.P. are in exergue below the design.
