What Are Fractional Coins?
The term fractional in precious metal investment refers to coins that are smaller than one troy ounce in weight. These coins are legal tender in their respective countries and are produced by major government and private mints.
One exception to this is the full Sovereign, which, although it contains 0.2354 troy ounces of gold, is not referred to as a fractional coin due to its historical significance. Some investors are put off by the small amounts of gold in certain coins. For example, 1/20 ounce gold coins contain just 0.0500 troy ounces of gold.
These coins often carry high premiums but offer the ability to navigate economic shocks with greater flexibility. It’s also worth noting that gold remains one of the most expensive precious metals, which is why fractional coins are such a popular entry point for new investors.

Why Fractional Coins?

From a fraction to a whole, here’s 3 reasons investors often start with fractional coins at Chards.
- Affordability: Fractional coins can be purchased monthly, bi-monthly or even quarterly meaning you can own gold bullion with a lower starting investment.
- Seamless Selling: Fractional coins are perfect if you want to invest but you also want to be able to sell them easily should you need to.
- Authenticity: All our coins are expertly authenticated. With over 60 years as a bullion and coin dealer, we have extensive knowledge and can identify the real from the fake.
Which Fractional Coins Should I Buy?
If you're unsure which fractional coins to buy, we always recommend that UK investors opt for British legal tender sterling coins, as these are exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT). In the UK, CGT is charged on the profit made when disposing of an asset that has increased in value. It applies only to the profit, not the total sale price.
However, if you're based outside the UK, we suggest choosing the lowest premium option, which is often found in world bullion coin ranges, such as our best-value half ounce gold world coins. We usually have a fantastic selection of fractional coins at competitive premiums, ready to be added to your portfolio.
It's also a good idea to check the live gold price and silver prices to see how much each metal is currently worth per ounce or gram, and in different currencies.
