The Vreneli, Vrenelli or Helvetia Head coins were issued from 1897 until 1949, with some exceptions. A total 58.6million coins were issued. Coins produced after 1936 are all restrikes.
The first Swiss 20 Franc coins were issued in Paris and Strasbourg, as the Swiss Minting facilities were deemed inadequate.
The coin obverse features a female head with plaited hair, a garland of flowers (Edelweiss), with mountains behind, and the inscription HELVETIA above modelled off Francoise Engli. It was designed by Swiss Medallist and sculptor, Fritz Landry. His signature appears below the portrait.
The reverse has a Swiss cross on a more ornate shield superimposed on an oak branch with ribbons. The value 20 FR appears at the sides of the shield, and the date below. This type was issued from 1897 to 1935, then again in 1947 and 1949.
During the end of WWII, the Swiss Mint issued 20 million restruck coins between 1945-47. These coins were all dated 1935. The coins all feature the letter 'L' to the left-hand side of the date, to differentiate them from the original 1935-dated coins.
Between 1947 and 1949, a further 9.2 million coins were restruck. These coins are dated 1947 and 1949, and do not bear the 'L' restrike marking.
This is sold as a bullion coin at a low premium above the gold spot price, the finish is uncirculated - this is not the grade.
