1696 William III Silver Crown

This variation of the 1696 crown has the year of reign in words “OCTAVO” included in the edge description.

There are two different types of obverses for this coin; the first and third bust of King William III. We will choose the bust depending on the grade specified. If you would like to specify a particular bust, please contact us.

We mainly see lower grades in this type of crown; the edge description is just about visible. They will also carry wear on the face and hair of William III.

William III continued to reign after the death of his wife, Mary Stuart.

The edge reads OCTAVO which is the eighth regnal year of William III.

The coins are issued in coin alignment. Other variations of the 1696 crown include a plain edge proof, no stops on the legend on the obverse and GEI instead of DEI on the obverse legend.

Obverse

There are two different obverses for this 1696 OCTAVO crown. The first shows the first bust of William III and the second shows the third bust. Both show King William III facing right with his hair flowing down his neck leaving a strand sitting below the truncation. The first bust shows a rounded breast plate where as the third shows a straight breast plate.

The legend reads “GVLIELMVS. III.DEI.GRA”

Reverse

The reverse shows four crowned shields which form a cruciform. The crowns on this reverse are equal to the width of the shields. The harp shield shows the first harp design with a thicker outline of the harp with the right top corner of the harp sitting slightly lower than the left top corner.

The legend reads “ET.HIB.REX.1696.MAG.BR.FRA”
