1953 - Present Day

When the Sovereign was reintroduced in 1817, the coin featured the St George and the Dragon reverse by Benedetto Pistrucci. The same design (minus the garter border and inscription) still appears on Sovereigns to this day.

During the reign of Elizabeth II there have only been a few years with different reverse designs.

1989 - Proof Only

There was a special design produced in 1989, however this was only issued as a proof coin. Designed by Bernard Sindall, the coin celebrates the 500th Anniversary of the first Sovereign and features a remastered version of the original Henry VII design.

2002 Shield of Arms

This was designed by Timothy Noad to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee. The reverse shows the Royal Arms within a laurel wreath.

2005 St George with Sword and Shield

We're not sure why a different design was issued in 2005. Again designed by Timothy Noad, the coin shows a stylised St George, carrying a shield and sword, slaying the dragon.

2012 St George with Lance

This was designed to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. It was designed by Paul Day and features a new interpretation of St George slaying the dragon.

2017 200th Anniversary

To celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the modern Sovereign, the proof version of the coin was issued with a remastered version of the original 1817 reverse, by Benedetto Pistrucci. What makes this different to the typical St George and the Dragon reverse, was the inclusion of the legend in garter. This reads "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pence" meaning "Shame be to him who thinks evil of it". This design was only used on the proof and BU versions of the coins.

The bullion version of the coin features a small privy mark which shows a '200' in a shield.

Obverse

The 2012 coin has the fourth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.

The 2016 and 2017 coins both show the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
