In 1913, sovereigns were issued by The Royal Mint, London, and by the branch mints in Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, Australia, and the Ottawa mint in Canada. The sovereign was a circulation coin with a face value of one pound. The Sydney mint struck 2,249,000 British sovereigns in this year.
Bertram Mackennal created this left facing effigy of King George V. His initials B. M. are in relief in the truncated neck. The coin bears the inscription:
GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX F.D.IND:IMP:
Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic engraving of George and the Dragon is featured on the reverse of the 1913 sovereign. The year and the initials B.P. are in exergue with the S mint mark set in the ground beneath the dragon.
"S" denotes that the coin was minted in Sydney.
