In common with all the other dates of "First Head" shield sovereigns from 1838 to 1848, the portrait is not only slightly smaller, but also in slightly higher relief. There are several variations of the 1842 Victoria young head sovereign. These include the original version, the open 2, the open 2 with missing serif on the 1 and an error where the word GR?TI? is used instead of GRATIA. We are always interested in purchasing early shield sovereigns in high grades. The 1842 Victoria young head portrait sovereign with the Victoria shield reverse was only minted in London. A total of 4,865,375 coins were issued in 1842.

The obverse of the 1842 sovereign was designed by engraver, William Wyon. It features the first (small) young head portrait of Victoria faces left. This portrait shows Queen Victoria at the very young age of 18 years of age, when she ascended the throne. This young head portrait shows Victoria with her hair arranged into a loosely knotted bun with two plain hair ribbons. The hair ribbons are also referred to as fillets. The date sits below the truncation and the initials of the engraver, William Wyon, W.W. are visible in relief towards the back of the truncation.

Designed by engraver Jean Baptiste Merlen, the reverse of this sovereign features the first shield. This shield, also known as the narrow shield, has a royal crown above. The shield is flanked on either side by laurel leaves which have been tied with a ribbon in a bow underneath. At the base of the ribbon there is an arrangement of a rose, a shamrock and a thistle; symbolising England, Ireland and Scotland with flower stops on either side.
