2022 Memorial Gold Half Sovereign Bullion Coins

The 2022 Memorial Gold Bullion Half Sovereign features a new Royal Coat of Arms reverse design, honouring the life of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

These are also the first bullion half sovereigns to feature the new portrait of King Charles III on the obverse.

History of the Sovereign Bullion Coin

The Sovereign bullion coin, a hallmark of quality and distinction, first came into existence during the reign of King Henry VII of England in 1489. With its impressive composition of 22 carat gold and weight of 7.98 grams.

The coin was accepted as currency in several nations, including India, Australia, and Canada, and was considered a prudent form of savings by many discerning individuals. During the First World War, production of the Sovereign was temporarily suspended, yet it was later reinstated in 1925 with an updated design.

Today, the Sovereign is still widely collected and traded as a bullion coin and is one of the most recognisable and valuable coins in the world.

Obverse

The obverse features the first coinage portrait of HM King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings. The text reads:

CHARLES III · DEI · GRA · REX · FID · DEF ·

Reverse

Designed by artist, Jody Clark, the reverse features a new depiction of the Royal Coat of Arms.

The Royal Arms consist of a quartered shield of the United Kingdom held by two supporters, the lion of England and the unicorn of Scotland. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown, topped by a golden lion.

The Order of the Garter, reading 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE' is just visible behind the shield. This French motto is roughly interpreted as “EVIL BE TO HIM WHO EVIL THINKS THEREOF”.

An intricate pattern appears in the background, with the floral emblems of England (rose), Scotland (thistle) and Ireland (shamrock) in the lower field.

At the bottom of the design, the motto "DIEU ET MON DROIT", meaning "GOD AND MY RIGHT" can be found, with the date '2022'.
