2022 Gold Proof Half Sovereign

2022 Royal Coat of Arms Gold Proof Half Sovereign

According to a Privy Council notice, the 2022 gold proof half sovereigns will have a special reverse design, featuring the Royal Coat of Arms. The Royal Coat of Arms is the official coat of arms for Queen Elizabeth II and the change in design will coincide with her Platinum Jubilee. Read more about the new 2022 Platinum Jubilee sovereign in our blog.

We have been stocking the new proof sovereign range every year since 2000. The information provided here is based on Privy Council notices, combined with over 20 years of experience. Once we receive embargoed information, we are constrained by what we can and cannot publish.

We almost always offer a worthwhile discount on the Royal Mint retail price. Once we accept a firm order, we guarantee to supply it.

Proof sovereigns are normally released around late October / early November. We will update this page when we have more information about the 2022 gold proof sovereigns.

The Royal Arms

The British Royal Coat of Arms is unique to each monarch. It consists of a crest, motto and shield, with two 'supporters' on each side. Queen Elizabeth II's coat of arms features the quartered shield of the United Kingdom, surmounted by a royal crown. The motto reads "dieu et mon droit", meaning "god on my right".

The shield dates back to the 1707 Act of Union and symbolises the alliance of the four Great British nations. The shield displays the three passant lions for England, the rampant lion for Scotland, the three lions for Wales and the golden harp for Northern Ireland. The supporters of the shield are a golden lion and a silver unicorn.

Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee

While the official announcements do not explicitly state that these new sovereign designs are for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, it is practically certain that they are, and it would be too much of a coincidence if they were not.

Elizabeth II accended the British throne on 6th February 1952 after the sudden death of her father, King George VI. She was not officially crowned until 2nd June 1953.

In 2022 Queen Elizabeth will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee (70 years of service). She is the first British monarch to reach this milestone event.

Obverse

The obverse will feature an impression of Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscription:

“· ELIZABETH II ∙ DEI ∙ GRA · REGINA ∙ FID ∙ DEF”

Reverse

According to documents issued by the Privy Council, a new sovereign will be issued featuring a Royal Coat of Arms reverse. The design states:

"A depiction of Our Royal Coat of Arms and the date of the year."
