2020 James Bond 'Wet Nellie' Submarine £2 Coin. This is the 2nd release in the 3-coin James Bond 007 Coin Series from The Royal Mint.

This silver proof coin features Bond's famous submarine, Wet Nellie. The coin comes presented in a black box, accompanied by a booklet about James Bond.

Struck from 0.999 fine silver, the coin contains one troy ounce of the precious metal. It has a limited edition presentation of just 7,007 coins.

Wet Nellie

The Wet Nellie submarine car is one of Bond's most famous gadgets. An engineering team made the wet submarine by converting a Lotus Espirit S1 sports car. The car was named after the actress and comedian, Nellie Wallace and appeared in the 1977 film 'The Spy Who Loved Me'.

After filming was completed, the car was moved into a pre-paid storage unit in New York for 10 years. When the contract ended, no-one claimed the contents of the storage facility so it was sold at auction. A couple purchased the contents of the locker (not knowing what was inside it) for just $100. They restored the car before it was sold at auction in 2013. The winning bidder was Elon Musk, who reportedly paid around £550,000 for it.

007 James Bond

James Bond was created by British author Ian Fleming. Bond first appeared in the 1953 novel, Casino Royale. The first Bond film, Dr No, was released in 1962. It was based on the sixth James Bond novel of the same name.

Six actors have played the British spy; Sean Connery, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.

The 25th James Bond film, entitled No Time To Die, is released in 2020, making this the perfect time for The Royal Mint to issue their series of James Bond coins.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark

The text reads:

ELIZABETH II • D • G • REG • F • D • 5 POUNDS • 2020

Reverse

The reverse was designed by graphic designers Matt Dent and Christian Davies. It shows the 'Wet Nellie' submarine going through water. The text reads:

PAY ATTENTION 007

The coin features an "07" which when placed together with the other coins in the series will say "007".
