2020 Music Legends: Elton John Gold Proof One Ounce Coin. The Music Legends Series continues with this Elton John 1oz gold coin. This is the second release in the series and it was approved by Elton John himself.
This gold coin is struck from 999.9 fine gold and contains one troy ounce of the precious metal. Only 300 of these coins have been produced.
Each coin comes in a wooden presentation box, with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
Elton John was born in London in 1942. He was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight but legally changed his name in 1972 to Elton Hercules John. He did this as he didn't like the name 'Reginald' and saw the change as a way to disassociate himself from his childhood.
John was born musically gifted; he taught himself piano at the age of 3 and started piano lessons when he was just 7. By 15 he was working as a pianist at a pub.
His long-time collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin has spawned such hits as Candle in the Wind, Rocket Man, Tiny Dancer, I'm Still Standing and Your Song.
The singer-songwriter has released 33 studio albums, 128 official singles, and sold over 300 million records worldwide.
This is the second release in the Music Legends series of coins from The Royal Mint. The first release was Queen.
We first heard about the coin after the Privy Council published information about it. The Privy Council is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and lively company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to The Privy Council for approval and that information is then announced on the Privy Council website.
The obverse of the coin features the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The reverse of the coin was designed by Bradley Morgan Johnson, who won a design competition for the coin. It is based on Elton's "I'm Still Standing" days and features a Union Jack in the background with a boater hat, glasses and a bow tie. The text reads "ELTON JOHN".
