200 Years of the Gold Sovereign

In 1817, the modern sovereign was introduced that featured Benedetto Pistrucci's original design and included the garter. Since the modern sovereign was released the weight and fineness have remained the same. The total mintage of the 1817 modern sovereign was 3,235,239.

In 2017 the Royal Mint manufactured the 200th anniversary of the modern sovereign to celebrate 200 years since the 1817 release.

Obverse

The obverse features the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark and includes initials J.C under the portrait. The obverse bears the inscription that reads as:

DEI • GRA • REG • FID • DEF • 2017 • ELIZABETH II

This is the first time the date has appeared on the obverse of a sovereign since 1887.

Reverse

The reverse reintroduces Benedetto Pistrucci's original 1817 sovereign design that shows St George slaying the dragon. The inscription appears within the garter:

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

The inscription and the garter are related to The Order of the Garter.
