Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee

In 2012, Britain and millions across the world celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Diamond Jubilee marked the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne. Her Majesty became just the second British monarch to reach this historical milestone, with only Queen Victoria achieving this incredible feat in 1897.

Why Should You Invest in Gold Sovereigns?

Gold Sovereigns have been trusted by investors for centuries, offering UK residents exemptions from VAT and Capital Gains Tax. They are recognised worldwide for their iconic St George and the Dragon design, created by one of The Royal Mint's great engravers, Benedetto Pistrucci, allowing for ease of trade and liquidation.

Sovereigns are an ideal entry point into precious metals due to their lower gold content compared to other popular world bullion coins, making them more affordable.

While smaller coins can sometimes carry slightly higher premiums than larger ones, you can mitigate this by taking advantage of our quantity breaks or opting for options like our best value sovereigns (pre-owned) or minty condition sovereigns (close to mint condition).

What Gold Sovereign Feature Special Reverse Designs?

For collectors, there is a range of gold sovereigns featuring special reverse designs to mark historical milestones. These include, but are not limited to, the following options.

Previous one-off designs include the 1989 500th Anniversary Sovereign, the 2002 Shield Reverse Sovereign issued to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee and the 2005 Sovereigns featuring a re-worked and stylised version of the traditional St George & Dragon design.

What Is Capital Gains Tax?

Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a form of levies imposed on the profit garnered from the sale of assets, such as real estate, investments, and collectibles. In the United Kingdom, the present CGT allowance is £3,000 per annum per individual, which implies that one can earn up to £3,000 from the sale of assets prior to being subject to CGT. Read our CGT guide for more information to see what bullion coins are exempt from CGT and the ones which are.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2012 gold sovereign features the fourth UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, along with the following inscription:

ELIZABETH II · DEI · GRA · REGINA · FID · DEF

Reverse

The reverse of the 2012 gold sovereign commemorates Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, depicting a special modern interpretation of St George slaying the Dragon by British sculptor Paul Day.

It is considered by many collectors as one of the most appealing designs to ever feature on British coinage. In addition, Paul's initials are under the horse's hoof, and the year is alongside the dragon's stomach.
