The silver proof piedfort Commonwealth Games coin set features coloured enamel on each of the coins, which is not seen on the other vase metal and silver proof versions. Completed in a luxury wooden presentation box, this coin set would look lovely on display.

More Info

In 2002, as the latest in this series of £2 coins, the Royal Mint is producing a series of designs commemorating the 17th Commonwealth Games held in Manchester.

This is particularly suitable as the first of the modern £2 coins issued in 1986 also honoured the Commonwealth Games of that year held in Edinburgh.

The silver proof piedfort version comes in a luxury wooden presentation box. The glossy booklet explains the history of The Games.

The coin set also comes complete with a gold plated on nickel-bras plaque to celebrate the Commonwealth Games. The plaque measure 35mm x 35mm, weighs 15.81 grams. The smaller logo on the plaque is depicted in bright colours.

Other four coin sets to celebrate the 2002 Commonwealth Games are:

Obverse

The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley's design of Queen Elizabeth.

The legend reads "ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF"

The edge inscription reads "SPIRIT OF FRIENDSHIP. MANCHESTER 2002"

Reverse

There are four different designs, all similar except that the central cameo features in turn the flags of, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Each country has a different colour,

  • England - White
  • Northern Ireland - Red
  • Scotland - Blue
  • Wales - Green

The obverse depicts a runner holding a banner which resembles a runnign track in a victory pose as they cross the line which is in colour.

Between the banner and the finish line is a coloured flag in a circle. Each coin represents a different flag from one of the home nations.

The legend reads "XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2002" on the right side of the coin.

Matthew Bonaccorsi's work of the above was a winning entry in a design competition.
