The gold proof version has been produced in 22 carat red gold, with the centre "gold sprayed" according to the Royal Mint, before striking. The issue limit was fixed at a maximum of 500 sets with 315 minted, which we consider to be quite a low mintage.

Demonstrating the highest achievement in the art of minting, the Four-Coin Gold Proof Set has a worldwide issue limit of just 500, and is sure to be a rare and sought-after collection. The luxurious red leather case, gold blocked with the now famous Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games logo, provides a fitting presentation and protects the precious contents from dust and harm, while the accompanying information booklet incorporates a Royal Mint Certificate of Authenticity.

There are four different designs, all similar except that the central cameo features in turn the flags of, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The obverse depicts a runner holding a banner which resembles a runnign track in a victory pose as they cross the line.
Between the banner and the finish line is a flag in a circle. Each coin represents a different flag from one of the home nations.
The legend reads "XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2002" on the right side of the coin.
