In 1858, there was only one main type of Victoria shield sovereign, the second (large) head.
Although there was only the one type of sovereign issued in 1858, there were two variations of the sizes of the year date, small date and large date. There is also a GRɅTIɅ version (see further info) and an overdate 8 over 7 in 1858. The coin here for sale is the overdate version.
Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details. Contact us if you require a photograph prior to purchase.
There are no die numbers, and the engraver's initials WW are incuse on the truncation of the neck.

The coin here for sale is the overdate version. Also, we have identified a new variation which is very exciting. Instead of the two letter As in GRATIA, this sovereign features what look like two inverted Vs, or unbarred A's, I.E. GRɅTIɅ.
The obverse bears William Wyon's Victoria Young Head portrait. This is the second (large) head type which shows the engraver's initials WW incuse in the truncated neck. The obverse bears the legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA and the date 1858.
The reverse bears the crown topped shield of arms within wreath by Jean Baptiste Merlen. The coin bears the legend BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID : DEF :
