What Are the Queen’s Beasts?

Sculptured for Elizabeth II's Coronation at Westminster Abbey in 1953, the Queen's Beasts are a series of ten statues. They combine heraldic elements and mythical creatures, forming a part of the Queen's royal ancestry.

The Queen's Beasts are: the Lion of England, Griffin of Edward III, Red Dragon of Wales, Black Bull of Clarence, Unicorn of Scotland, Yale of Beaufort, Falcon of the Plantagenets, White Lion of Mortimer, White Horse of Hanover, and White Greyhound of Richmond.

Many of the beasts are based on the stone sculptures that remain standing as relics of the House of Tudor, from the reign of King Henry VIII, at the entrance of Hampton Court Palace.

Queen's Beasts On Coins

The Royal Mint launched its Queen's Beasts coin range in 2016. The series concluded in 2021 after ten releases, followed by an additional eleventh release known as the Completer Coin, which depicted all ten of the Queen's Beasts on one coin.

All ten beasts were designed by Jody Clark, notable for being the designer of the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II and many popular Royal Mint releases.

As all Queen's Beasts coins are current UK legal tender pound sterling coins, they are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, which may allow you to make a profit if you decide to sell in the future.

The Tudor Beasts

After the completion of the Queen's Beasts coin collection, The Royal Mint introduced the next chapter with The Tudor Beasts series in 2021. Several of the designs included in The Tudor Beasts range also appear in The Queen's Beasts series but are now designed by David Lawrence and not Jody Clark.

The Queen's panther was commissioned by Henry VIII as part of the ten heraldic beasts that appear on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace. The ten statues represent King Henry VIII's Tudor ancestry and his marriage to his third wife, Jane Seymour.

The Legacy of Mary Gillick

Born in Nottingham in 1881, Mary Gillick, designer of Queen Elizabeth II first portrait, studied at the city’s High School for Girls from 1890 to 1898, progressing to the art school until 1902 and perfected her craft as a scholar under Lanteri at the Royal College of Art from 1902 to 1904.

Competing against 16 other artists, the elegance of Gillick’s design earned the portrait a place on the reverse of all UK coinage from 1953 to 1967.

During this period, the Mary Gillick portrait was perhaps most famously used on gold sovereigns to showcase the young Queen. If you wish to collect UK coins featuring the first portrait of Elizabeth II, you may be interested in our Mary Gillick graded sovereigns, which are graded by the Numismatic Grading Company.

Obverse

The obverse of the square bar includes the first portrait of Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick, in a coin-shaped design with the inscription 'The Queen's Beasts.' Encircling Mary Gillick's design are the ten Queen's Beasts in a 360-degree design.

Reverse

The reverse of the silver bar features The Royal Mint logo and bar specifications, with the backdrop featuring a chainmail design covering the entire back.
