This set has an issue limit of only 500!

These special commemorative sovereign gold coins were issued by the East India Company to commemorate 200 years since the end of King George III's reign.

This gold coin set is comprised of 3 coins: a sovereign, a half sovereign and a quarter sovereign. Each coin is struck in 22-carat (0.917) fine gold, with the set containing a total of 0.4114 troy ounces of the precious metal.

King George III

George III was one of Britain's longest serving monarchs, and sat upon the throne for nearly 60 years. He was however, one of the most unfortunate ones, and spent most of his final years in poor mental health, for which he is sadly, best known.

The Coinage Act 1816

In 1816, Britain was in the grip of a financial crisis!

During the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802) and the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) Britain had exchanged large cash subsidies to pay nations such as Austria, Prussia and Russia to join British forces in the fight against France. As a direct result of the military and economic warfare against France, Britain was thrown into a state of great financial instability.

In order to restabilise Britain’s currency, the government introduced a series of coins, including the sovereign. These coins were truly worth their weight in gold and silver and the Act defined the value of the pound sterling relative to gold and silver.

Obverse

The obverse shows the fifth definitive portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.

Reverse

The reverse of these coins are:

Sovereign

The sovereign coin features a modern interpretation of 1799 spade guinea, originally designed by Lewis Pingo. The inscription reads:

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE 2020

Half Sovereign

The half sovereign design is inspired by the 1817 silver half crown. This was the first crown coin to be issued after the Coinage Act of 1816.

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

Quarter Sovereign

The quarter sovereign is a tribute to the 1798 'Dorrien Magens' shilling, which is considered the rarest shilling issued during King George III's reign. The inscription reads:

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE 2020
