Queen Wilhelmina

The Dutch Guilder gold coin features a portrait of Queen Wilhelmina as the obverse design, with the reverse design revealing the Netherlands Lesser Coat of Arms. The coin has also been referred to as the "Wilhelmina Gulden" and "Wilhelmina Old Head Guilder."

Queen Wilhelmina enjoyed a long reign from 1890 to 1948, and four different designs of gold 10 guilder coins were issued in this time. The fourth type was issued between 1925 and 1933 inclusive, although only five dates were issued, including 1932.

Gulden, Guilden and Florins

The Dutch monetary unit has various names. In the Netherlands, it is known as a gulden or florin, but English speakers usually refer to it as a guilder.

Dutch Guilders may also be referred to as gulden, guilden, or florins. This is sold as a bullion coin at a low premium above the gold spot price, the finish is uncirculated - this is not the grade. The coins may have some small scuffs or edge knocks.

Best Value Gold Coins

10 Guilders are a popular choice for investors looking to pay a small premium above the spot gold price. Similiar in size to the sovereign, the Guilder, together with the French 20 Franc, Italian 20 Lire, German 20 Mark and the Swiss 20 Franc were used as circulation coins in Europe.

If you are looking for a dated 10 Guilder or a graded coin please contact us on 01253 343081. We sell 1932 10 Guilders graded aUNC here.

Obverse

An inscription surrounding the portrait reads:

KONINGIN WILHELMINA.GOD ZIJMETONS

Reverse

The reverse shows the Dutch coats of arms which depicts a crowned shield featuring a lion holding a sword and arrows. A seahorse and a caduceus (winged staff with snakes entwined) appear on either side of the shield. The legend reads:

KONINGRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN

This translates as:

Kingdom of the Netherlands
