These silver pennies were issued during the reign of Henry II.
Henry II, also known as Henry Plantagenet, was the first of the Plantagenet Kings.
Despite ruling England from 1154 - 1189, he did not speak any English. His family originated from Normandy and so the king only spoke French.
In 1166 he introduced trial by jury.
The coins produced during Henry II's reign replaced the increasingly sub-standard ones issued during the period of King Stephen.
