The obverse features a bare-headed portrait of Napoleon III with the inscription NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR. The engraver's name BARRE is in relief below the bust.
This is the third type 20 Francs gold coin struck during the reign of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte III. The obverse bears a laureate portrait of the emperor designed by Désiré-Albert Barre, Chief Engraver at the Paris Mint. The coin bears the inscription NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR. The engraver's name BARRE is in relief below the head.
The obverse was designed by Jules-Clément Chaplain. The laureate bust portrays France's national symbol, Marianne with the engraver's name set in relief J C CHAPLAIN. The coin features the inscription REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE.
The reverse engraving features the value 20 FRANCS and the year date in three lines surrounded by a laurel wreath. Around the outside of the wreath is the inscription EMPIRE FRANCAIS. The mint mark A or BB appears below the wreath.
The reverse design by Désiré-Albert Barre bears the crowned shield bearing the arms of the Second French Empire of Napoleon III featuring an eagle with the divided value 20 FR. The inscription EMPIRE FRANCAIS are above the shield with the date below. The mint mark A or BB appears to the left of the date which varies depending on the coin.
The reverse bears an engraving of the unofficial French national symbol the le coq gaulois, rooster, by Jules-Clément Chaplain. The coin bears the inscription LIBERTE·EGALITE·FRATERNITE· with the denomination split 20 Fcs. Mint marks are either side of the date.
