How to Spot a Fake Gold Double Eagle

What Mintmarks Appear on these American Gold Double Eagles

They may contain a mixture of mintmarks:

  • D = Denver
  • O = New Orleans
  • P = Philadelphia (no mintmark)
  • CC = Carson City
  • S = San Francisco

History of the Double Eagle

The first Double Eagles were produced in 1849, and only two are known to exist in proof. One is part of the Smithsonian collection, while the other was sold as part of the Treasury Secretary's estate and is currently missing.

The gold content in the Double Eagle coin is 0.9675, which was worth $20 in 1849, based on the gold price of $20.67 per ounce.

In 1907 and 1908, some of the coins were issued without the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," which makes them unique and highly sought after by collectors. Although the "no motto" coins are not rare, they hold a special place in history because they were the result of President Theodore Roosevelt's belief that God and gold did not mix.

In 2021, the rare 1933 Double Eagle sold for an incredible $18.9 million, making it the second coin ever sold at such a high price. The first was sold in 2002 for $7.6 million.

Historic Coins at Bullion Prices!

Historically American gold eagles are $10 gold coins, and double eagles are $20 gold coins, issued between 1849 and 1933. Please don't confuse them with the modern gold eagle bullion coins made since 1986 which are issued containing one ounce of gold, and fractions of one ounce.

Any coin sold for a value less than a 180% intrinsic is considered a bullion coin.

Gold investment products are VAT free. Silver investment products are inclusive of VAT at the current rate unless otherwise stated.

All investment products are based on the live precious metal price. Prices will be fixed once the item has been added to the basket and recalculates just before checking out.

If your product is not a graded coin and is considered a bullion item, it should be noted that these are bought and sold on low premiums over their precious metal content and not solely for aesthetic purposes; therefore, some products may have edge knocks and/or marks. These edge knocks and marks do not alter the specifications of the coins.

Please note that all investment products are exempt from the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 and therefore customers do not have the right to cancel their order once the order has been accepted.
