This is an Axial Lighting Glass Support Stand to enable professional lighting when photographing coins.

This kit includes:

  • Axial Lighting Glass Support Stand
  • Glass panel
  • 'How to' Instructions

This is a simple stand to support the glass at 45 degrees - enabling the photographer to adjust other things like focus and depth of field etc. View more information about Axial Illumination Lighting.

The stand is supplied flat packed with glass (taped edges).  Assembly instructions included.  The stand is made of MDF and is NOT painted.  You can add your own to it if you wish - it's easier to spray paint after assembly.  If you do not intend to paint it then a few dabs of superglue (not supplied) on joints may be needed.

What is Axial Lighting?

Axial Lighting is the photographic term used for light that appears to be coming from the lens. Simply, a light source is placed at right angles to the subject and shines onto a piece of glass, placed at 45 degrees, which is then reflected down onto the subject. It gives even illumination unlike other methods (ring light etc)

Axial lighting is a way to illuminate the subject as though the source light was coming from the camera lens. The light source is positioned at 90 degrees and points toward the side of the subject.

A baffle is used to stop stray light hitting the side of the coin. A piece of 3mm glass is placed above the coin at 45 degrees.

The light hits the glass and some of it will bounce down perfectly illuminating the coin. Some of the light will continue going straight through the glass and it is important to have something dark to absorb that on the right to stop it bouncing back and up into the lens which would cause flare.

Important here is the 100mm macro & 180 macro lens’ we use which give more room to work with - there is room to place the glass over the subject but under the lens. We couldn't do this with a supermacro lens like the 65mm - there would be no room for the glass.
