This iconic gold proof coin set celebrates the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the 50 pence coin.
16 gold proof coins are featured in this set, each with a different design, with all the coins dated 2009. Only 125 of these sets were produced by the Royal Mint. The certificate number is 025.
This 50p coin set includes the highly sought-after Kew Gardens 50 pence coin. Only 629 of these gold proof coins were issued, making them extremely rare.
The set features some red spots, which are a natural process which can occur to gold coins.
Red spot can occur on almost any gold coin, it certainly happens on 22 carat gold coins. We have seldom seen it on .999(9) fine gold coins, and presume it is virtually impossible for it to occur on actual fine gold (1.000/1.000).
First issued in 1969, the 50 pence replaced the 10-shilling note becoming the third decimal coin introduced British currency. Despite its introduction in the late 1960’s, the coins heritage can be traced far before this, with silver half pound coins being issued around 1559 and 1646, and the still popular today, half sovereign coming to fruition in 1544.
What set the 50 pence apart was its heptagonal shape which was a unique trait, rarely found within British coinage at the time, until the circulation of the 20 pence in 1982.
All the coins' obverses feature Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of HM The Queen. This is the forth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
