What Is the Special Relationship Between the UK and the US?

On 5th March 1946, Prime Minister Winston Churchill introduced the term "special relationship" to describe the alliance between Great Britain and the United States. This unique bond began to develop in the early 20th century and was firmly established during the Second World War.

The phrase reflects the extraordinarily close ties shared by the UK and US across political, diplomatic, cultural, economic, military, and historical spheres.

Britannia and Liberty Collection

The Lion and Eagle coins were not the only bullion coins created in collaboration between The Royal Mint and the US Mint. There is also the Britannia and Liberty collection. Originally released as coins and now available in bar form, the collection beautifully represents Lady Britannia and Liberty, symbolising the strength and freedom of both nations.

Obverse

Designed by Martin Jennings, the obverse features a portrait of HM King Charles III. The legend reads:

CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS ·

Reverse

The reverse design features the Lion and the Eagle seated side by side in commanding postures, both gazing to their left. With the Lion proudly posed on a rocky surface beyond the central enclosed circle, the design creates a striking 3D effect that adds depth to the artwork. Encircling the design, the inscription reads as follows:

THE LION AND THE EAGLE · 2026

1 oz FINE GOLD · 999.9
