Sir Isaac Newton

Rising to prominence in the late 17th century, Sir Issac Newton was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, alchemist, theologian, author and inventor. As his title and roles suggest, he was a highly respected figure and at the centre of multiple world-changing scientific discoveries including the laws of motion, gravity and the light spectrum.

In 1696, Sir Isaac Newton took the post of Warden of The Royal Mint, taking a leading roll in England's Great Recoinage before moving to the role of Master of the Mint in 1699. Newton took these roles as seriously as he would any work and reformed the English currency, bringing harsh penalties for counterfeiters whilst heading his own investigations into the criminal world of fake coinage.

What Is Capital Gains Tax?

Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a form of levies imposed on the profit garnered from the sale of assets, such as real estate, investments, and collectibles. In the United Kingdom, the present CGT allowance is £3,000 per annum per individual, which implies that one can earn up to £3,000 from the sale of assets prior to being subject to CGT.

For UK residents, bullion coins which are UK legal tender pound sterling coins are exempt from capital gains tax (CGT).

Obverse

The obverse features the uncrowned portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings, framed by the following text:

CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 5 POUNDS ·
