The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy novel series written by English author, linguist and scholar, J. R. R. Tolkien. Initially intended as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 novel, The Hobbit, the idea and world developed into a much larger work, complete with entire languages, races and locations within the world of Middle Earth.

In 2001, after years of preparation and hard work, Peter Jackson's magical interpretation of Tolkien's work hit the silver screen with the first film of a trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring. The trilogy featured a star-studded ensemble cast with actors such as Elijah Wood, Christopher Lee, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett and many more, and received fanfare and acclaim from both critics and audiences around the globe.

Who is J. R. R. Tolkien?

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (3 January 1892-2 September 1973), was an English writer and philologist born in Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State of Southern Africa.

Taking an early interest into literature, Tolkien first embraced linguistics in his early teens, studying Latin and Anglo-Saxon. By the time of First World War, Tolkien elected to enter a programme to he delay enlistment until the completion of his degree in English Language and Literature, of which he graduated in 1915 with first-class honours from Exeter College.

Tolkien's time at war, including involvement in the Battle of the Somme, left a lasting impact on the young writer, with many speculating about his stories being an allegory for the war, despite an explicit denial that this was the case.

What is Proof?

Proof coins are specially produced to a much higher standard of finish than bullion coins, with multiple strikes for a highly-detailed design. These coins are not graded by condition but are instead defined by their method of production. Originally created as pre-production samples, proof coins now serve a prominent role in the collector's market.
