The 2025 Proof Sovereign Collection

The 2025 proof Sovereign collection is special among collectors as it marks the first time in the series that Merlen's design is paired with the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.

Are the 2025 Sovereigns the Final Coins to Be Struck in Rose Gold?

Yes, the 2025 Sovereign coins will be the last to be struck in rose gold, with the 2026 Sovereigns returning to their original yellow colour. Many long-term investors expressed a preference for the traditional yellow gold sovereigns, and The Royal Mint has listened.

Legacy of Jean Baptiste Merlen

Jean Baptiste Merlen was a renowned French engraver, initially employed by the Paris Mint before eventually joining The Royal Mint in 1820. He is celebrated for his contributions to numismatics and coin design. Merlen is best known for his obverse portrait of George IV, introduced in 1821, which was the first to depict a male monarch without a crown or laureate.

What Are Brilliant Uncirculated Sovereigns?

Brilliant uncirculated is a type of condition for sovereigns which are uncirculated and struck to a superior standard than their circulating counterparts. They are considered to be in better condition than typical 'normal' bullion sovereign coins but not as great as proof sovereign coins.

Why Collect BU Coins?

BU coins are created for collectors seeking hand-finished dies to ensure sharper, more pristine images of the coin designs. Collectors can expect to pay higher premiums for these coins from dealers due to their higher condition compared to bullion coins, but the premiums will be lower than those of proof condition coins.
