How Monopoly Became a Global Cultural Phenomenon

Monopoly, created in the United States during the 1930s, was introduced to the UK by Waddingtons of Leeds.

The British version featured London landmarks. Globally, it became a cultural icon, teaching economics, sparking family rivalries, and inspiring countless localised editions.

It’s also a useful game for helping younger individuals develop an understanding of money and property.

Obverse

Designed by Martin Jennings, the obverse features the non-crowned portrait of King Charles III. The text reads:

· CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 50 PENCE · 2025 ·

Reverse

The reverse, designed by Bella Biggs, captures many beloved in-game elements to the delight of board game fans. It features player tokens, property cards, properties, the community chest symbol, the Chance card symbol, and Mr Monopoly. An inscription also reads as follows:

90 YEARS OF MONOPOLY
