Gold Kangaroo Coins

The Perth Mint is well known for the superb quality and beautiful designs of their bullion coins. These gold coins are issued in protective capsules and are sold as an investment product.

Gold Nuggets

The Perth Mint introduced this range of gold coins in 1987. They were originally known as Nuggets due to the reverse designs of famous gold nuggets that had been discovered in Australia. Even though the design changed to a kangaroo in 1990 the name stuck and they are still referred to as Nuggets as well as kangaroos.

Kangaroos or Nuggets

When introduced in 1986, the kangaroo coins originally featured famous gold nuggets on their reverse. In 1990 this changed to show kangaroos. For this reason the coins may be referred to as 'nuggets', 'kangaroos' or even 'roos'.

The kangaroo is seen as a symbol of progress in Australia, as it cannot move backwards, only forwards.

Kangaroo Facts

Let's learn more about these iconic Australian marsupials!

  • Marsupials: Kangaroos are marsupials, meaning they carry their young in a pouch.
  • Diverse Species: There are many different species of kangaroos, ranging in size from the tiny rock wallaby to the large red kangaroo.
  • Powerful Legs: Kangaroos are known for their powerful hind legs, which allow them to hop at high speeds.
  • Herbivores: Kangaroos are herbivores, primarily feeding on grasses and leaves.

Obverse

The obverse of each coin features the Australian coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne. The coin also includes the following inscription:

CHARLES III AUSTRALIA · 100 DOLLARS ·

Reverse

The reverse of the coin depicts an Australian native kangaroo lying down as the focal point of the design, with another kangaroo standing in the background, gazing at an Australian plant.
