Originally published in 2004, The Gruffalo's Child, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, has captured the hearts of millions.
The story follows the curious daughter of the Gruffalo, who disregards her father's warnings and ventures into the snowy forest in search of the 'Big Bad Mouse.' Along the way, she encounters various creatures but eventually meets the clever mouse, who outsmarts her, confirming her father's story.
In 2019, to celebrate 20 years since the release of The Gruffalo in 1999, two 50p coin designs were issued. The first design featured a close-up portrait of the Gruffalo, while the second depicted the Gruffalo looking at the mouse, a key character who outwits him in the story.
Emma Noble is a British designer who collaborates with The Royal Mint to bring many famous children's literature characters to life on UK coinage. Some of her notable work includes collectible 50 pence coins, such as the Peter Rabbit collection, and more.
Designed by Martin Jennings, the obverse features the non-crowned portrait of King Charles III. The text reads:
CHARLES III · DEI · GRA · REX · FID · DEF · 2024
The reverse shows the Gruffalo's daughter in a snow-covered forest, holding onto a branch with her free hand while scratching her chin, perhaps pondering how to outwit the Big Bad Mouse. The mouse appears opposite The Gruffalo's Child, gripping a tall branch and staring into her eyes with a mischievous smile, his tail hanging downwards from the branch.
