In addition to singing, he played bass guitar and piano in the band. Paul announced his departure from The Beatles on April 10, 1970, while promoting his forthcoming solo album, McCartney. During the production of the album, he was reportedly in an emotional state of depression following John Lennon's departure from the band in September 1969. The album initially received mostly negative reviews.

Following his debut solo album, Paul formed the band Wings with his first wife, Linda McCartney, and Denny Laine. The trio, along with additional band members, went on to release seven studio albums. Among these, Band on the Run, released in 1973, became his most successful album, achieving over 9.2 million sales.

As a solo artist, Paul McCartney continued to excel, selling over 67 million music records. In 2009, he was recognised by the Guinness World Records as the most successful songwriter of all time.
