The Perth Mint was established in 1899 during the peak of the Western Australian gold rush. Its primary purpose was to mint Australian gold into British sovereigns, a role it fulfilled until 1931, striking a total of 106 million gold sovereigns.
As such, it is Australia's oldest mint still producing bullion coins. It is one of the world's most active mints in both bullion and collectors coins, producing gold, silver, and platinum coins for its native Australia, and other countries.

The Perth Mint introduced the Kangaroo range of gold coins in 1987. They were originally known as 'nuggets' due to the reverse designs featuring famous gold nuggets that had been discovered in Australia. Even though the design changed to a Kangaroo in 1990 the name stuck and they are still referred to as 'nuggets' as well as 'kangaroos'.
The Perth Mint first issued Silver Kookaburra coins in 1990, featuring the Kookaburra, the largest known kingfishers.
These coins were originally issued in 0.999 fineness, until 2018, when the Perth Mint changed the silver coins to 0.9999 fine. Each coin contains 1 troy ounce of the precious metal and comes issued in a protective capsule.
The Koala bullion coin series is a highly esteemed collection of gold and silver coins manufactured by the Perth Mint of Australia. First issued in 2007, the series features designs of the adored Australian marsupial, the koala, in its natural habitat.
The obverse shows a depiction of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne, and is inscribed with the following inscription:
CHARLES III AUSTRALIA · 100 DOLLARS ·
The reverse depicts three iconic Australian native animals, a kangaroo, a koala, and kookaburra which are featured on contemporary coin series. Designed by Jennifer McKenna at the Perth Mint, these animals are positioned around golden wattle, Australia's national floral emblem.
Also featured is an inscription inside a scroll at the bottom of the design, commemorating 125 years of The Perth Mint. It reads as follows:
1899 THE PERTH MINT 2024
Additionally, a 'P125' mintmark is included, and coin specifications including the weight, purity, and issue date.
