This 2023 Lion of England Tudor Beasts 1 oz Silver Proof Coin is part of the 3rd release of coins in the Royal Mint’s Tudor Beasts Series.

This silver proof coin is struck from .999 fine silver and issued in a presentation box, along with a numbered certificate of authenticity from the Royal Mint.

The coin has a limited edition presentation of just 5,000 coins.

Yale of Beaufort

The yale is a mythical animal. It is thought to be the size of an elephant, with a goat, or antelope-like body, the tusks and horns of a boar and the tail of a lion.

The Tudor Beasts

The Tudor Beasts (also known as the King's Beasts) are a series of 10 heraldic statues which line the moat bridge at Hampton Court Palace. Made over 400 years ago, the statues were commissioned by Henry VIII, and represent his Tudor ancestry and his marriage to his third wife, Jane Seymour.

Obverse

The obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by Jody Clark.

Reverse

The reverse was designed by David Lawrence. It shows a Yale holding a shield, featuring part of Jane Seymour’s coat of arms.

The segment shows an augmentation of honour. It was awarded to Jane’s father, Edward Seymour, upon King Henry’s marriage to Jane. It consists of three lions in the centre, with three fleur-de-lis on each side.
