Perth Mint Authentication Feature

The reverse of the 1 oz and 1 kilo coins feature a security feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter incorporated into the coin's design. This feature is only visible when viewed under a magnifying glass.

On this 2023 coin, a small letter 'P' can be found within the leaves of the tree, on the coin's reverse.

Queen Elizabeth II

The Perth Mint Kangaroo coin has featured Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on every release to date. We anticipate that the first coin to feature King Charles III will be issued on the 2024 kangaroo obverse.

Kangaroos or Nuggets

When introduced in 1986, the kangaroo coins originally featured famous gold nuggets on their reverse. In 1990 this changed to show kangaroos. For this reason the coins may be referred to as 'nuggets', 'kangaroos' or even 'roos'.

The kangaroo is seen as a symbol of progress in Australia, as it cannot move backwards, only forwards.

Obverse

The obverse bears a memorial portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by Jody Clark and bears the inscription:

Reverse

Designed by artist Ing Ing Jong, the reverse portrays a kangaroo looking over its shoulder against a backdrop of verdant grassland. The inscription of the coin reads as:
