This 2023 Petition Crown 2 oz Silver Proof 2-Coin Set is part of the Royal Mint's Great Engravers Series.
These coins pay tribute to former Chief Engraver of The Royal Mint, Thomas Simon, who is known for his outstanding contributions to the world of coin engraving.
The reverses of these 999 fine silver coins feature Simon's portrait of Charles II and the quartered arms, as seen on the petition crown.
The obverse side of the Great Engravers coins displays the first definitive coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, which was created by Martin Jennings. This marks the first time that this portrait has been featured on this series of coins.
Each coin has been struck using a combination of modern technology and the reintroduction of long-forgotten techniques, resulting in a stunning masterpiece which captures the essence of British heritage and tradition.
Born in Yorkshire in 1623, Simon began his career as an apprentice to a goldsmith in London. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skill in engraving and was appointed as the chief engraver of the Royal Mint in 1649.
Perhaps his most famous design is the "Petition Crown" of 1663, which featured a portrait of Charles II on the obverse and a depiction of the king on horseback on the reverse. This coin was commissioned by the king himself and intended to be a gift to foreign ambassadors.
The 1663 Petition Crown is an unparalleled masterpiece of historical significance and breath-taking beauty. Designed by the illustrious Thomas Simon, the renowned master engraver of the 17th century, this coin is a rare and highly coveted piece of artistry.
Simon's unparalleled mastery of engraving is immediately evident on the obverse of the coin, where he expertly rendered the likeness of Charles II, the king of England at the time. The intricate details and flawless execution of this portrait are nothing short of astounding, making it a true testament to Simon's unparalleled skill.
The reverse of the coin is equally impressive, featuring a wreath of oak leaves and acorns surrounding a shield of arms, and the Latin inscription "Exurgat Deus Dissipentur Inimici," which translates to "Let God arise, and His enemies be scattered." This stunning design is not only visually appealing, but it also serves as a powerful symbol of England's strength and power during this period.
For the first time, the new coinage portrait of King Charles III appears on these Great Engravers coins. The coin also bears the following inscription:
2023 · CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 5 POUNDS ·
The raised edge lettering, etched across two lines, adds to its unique charm and visual appeal.
