History of Britannia

The Silver Britannia is a popular coin produced by the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom. British silver bullion Britannia coins were introduced in 1997. Up until 2013, the coins were struck from Britannia silver (0.958 fine). In 2013, this changed to 0.999 fine silver.

Today the coins are widely considered to be the UK's most popular Capital Gains Tax (CGT) silver bullion coin range. For more information on UK Britannia bullion coins, you can read our blog, which details the history of the Britannia since its adoption.

Coinage Portrait Transition From QEII to KCIII

Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022, The Royal Mint released two versions of the 2023 Britannia coins: one featuring Queen Elizabeth II's fifth portrait and another with the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III.

The new portrait, crafted by renowned sculptor and engraver Martin Jennings, debuted on the 2023 King Charles III Britannia coin range and is now featured on the entire 2024 Britannia coin series.

What Is Capital Gains Tax?

Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a form of levies imposed on the profit garnered from the sale of assets, such as real estate, investments, and collectibles. In the United Kingdom, the present CGT allowance is £3,000 per annum per individual, which implies that one can earn up to £3,000 from the sale of assets prior to being subject to CGT.

For UK residents, bullion coins which are UK legal tender pound sterling coins are exempt from capital gains tax (CGT).

Obverse

The obverse bears the Jody Clark portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II. This is the final time the portrait will appear on the Britannia coins, as it will eventually be replaced by the new King Charles III effigy by Martin Jennings.

The text on the coin reads:

ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 500 POUNDS

Reverse

The 2023 silver Britannia reverse features Philip Nathan's classic 'standing Britannia'. She is shown holding a trident and shield. The text reads:

BRITANNIA 2023 1 KILO 999 FINE SILVER

The special security features include a small latent image on the bottom-left. Acting as a hologram, it changes between a trident and a padlock, depending on the angle the coin is held.

A micro-text border is also used. It says "DECUS ET TUTAMEN", which translates to “AN ORNAMENT AND A SAFEGUARD". The field features surface animation - micro-waves which create lines, showing a pattern in the background. Tincture lines have been added to show colours and patterns on the metal.
