This 2023 KCIII 1st & 2nd Portrait Gold Britannia Bundle contains the crowned and uncrowned portrait effigies of King Charles III. The bundle includes the 2023 Coronation Britannia (crowned) and the 2023 Standard Britannia (uncrowned).
The coronation coin marks the first occasion of King Charles III being depicted on the Britannia coin with the crowned portrait design. In contrast, the 1 oz uncrowned Britannia coin marks King Charles III's debut appearance on Britannias.
These coins are supplied in protective capsules, along with a storage pouch.
The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla was an event that captivated the attention of people throughout the UK and around the globe. The ceremony took place on May 6th, 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London.
This Royal Mint bullion coin has special security features. These include a small latent image on the bottom-left. Acting as a hologram, it changes between a trident and a padlock, depending on the angle the coin is held.
After the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on 8th September 2022, Martin Jennings sculpted and designed the new King Charles III definitive coinage portrait.
Furthermore, following his initial portrayal of His Majesty in the UK definitive coinage, he was once again commissioned to engrave the crowned coinage portrait design to commemorate the coronation of KCIII.
Jennings was born in 1957. He graduated from the University of Oxford in 1979, where he studied English Literature and Language. Afterwards, Jennings undertook a course in Lettering (1979-80).
Gold bullion Britannia coins are the UK's most popular CGT exempt 1oz gold coin. Britannias were introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987. These British gold bullion coins have a face value of £100. Between 1987 - 2012, the coins were struck in 22 carat gold (0.9167 fineness); from 2013 onwards, the coins have been struck in 24 carat gold (0.9999 fineness). The coins all contain one troy ounce of gold, whether they are struck in 22 carat gold or 24 carat gold.
Each coin in this 2-coin bundle features a unique obverse design.
Designed by Martin Jennings, each coin contains a portrait of King Charles III. The standard Britannia is shown with the uncrowned, or bare head portrait, whilst the Coronation Britannia depicts the King wearing the Tudor crown.
Each coin in this 2-coin bundle showcases the same reverse design.
Both coins boast the iconic 'standing Britannia' motif, by renowned artist Philip Nathan. These coins also incorporate the cutting-edge security features, first introduced in 2021.
One such feature is the small latent image on the bottom-left of the coin, which acts as a hologram, seamlessly transitioning between a trident and a padlock depending on the angle at which the coin is held. Additionally, a micro-text border encircling Britannia bears the inscription "DECUS ET TUTAMEN", translating to “an ornament and a safeguard”.
