This 2022 Gold Proof Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee 50p 2 Coin Set was issued by the Royal Mint. It marks the first time fifty pence coins have been struck to celebrate a royal event!

Celebrating the 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II, this gold proof coin set consists of two 50 pence coins, each featuring the '70' reverse design by Osborne Ross. The coins feature 2 obverse designs; a new design by John Bergdahl, and the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II which, was only issued as part of sets.

Each coin contains 0.456 troy ounces of gold.

Platinum Jubilee

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrates 70 years since she ascended the throne on 6th February 1952, although her coronation would not take place until June the following year.

Queen Elizabeth II is Britain's longest reigning monarch, after surpassing that of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria (63 years, 216 days), in 2015.

Her Majesty is also the 4th longest reigning monarch of all time, behind Louis XIV of France, Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) of Thailand, and Johann II of Liechtenstein.

Obverse

The first coin shows the familiar fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Jody Clark.

The surrounding text reads:

ELIZABETH II • D • G • REG • F • D • 50 PENCE • 2022

The second coin shows John Bergdahl's portrait of the Queen on horseback. This is similar to the 1953 Coronation crown.

The design is surrounded by the Order of the Garter, “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE”.

The text reads:

Reverse

The reverse of both coins shows the Osborne Ross design for the Platinum Jubilee which features a clean reverse, comprising of the number 70, Queen Elizabeth II’s royal cypher and the years that span her reign thus far (1952-2022).

The initials at the bottom of the coin "AR DO" stand for design company Osborne Ross, with "AR" for Andrew Ross and "DO" for Deborah Osborne.
