The coin will be struck from 999 fine silver and feature a depiction of Maid Marian on the reverse.

Maid Marian

Maid Marian is often portrayed as Robin Hood's love interest, there are even rumours they married at the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in South Yorkshire.

Marian is characterised as a strong and independent woman instead of the typical damsel-in-distress. She is one of the earliest examples of a strong female character in English literature.

Robin Hood

Robin Hood has been a part of British folklore since the 13th century. The legend of the skilled archer who was known to steal from the rich to give to the poor has been passed down through generations.

Hood's accomplices, the 'Merry Men' included Little John, Will Scarlett, Friar Tuck, Much and Maid Marian. They were said to have lived together in Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham.

Robin Hood has been portrayed in numerous books, television series and over 100 films. Depictions of him have varied over time, with him being shows as a peasant or a nobleman.

Privy Council

We first heard about the coin after the Privy Council published information about it. The Privy Council is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and lively company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to the Privy Council for approval and that information is then announced on the Privy Council website.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin will feature a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription:

Reverse

According to the Privy Council notice, the reverse will feature

a depiction of Maid Marian accompanied by the inscription “MAID MARIAN · 1OZ · FINE SILVER · 999 ·” and the date of the year
