Maid Marian

Maid Marian is often portrayed as Robin Hood's love interest, there are even rumours they married at the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in South Yorkshire.

Marian is characterised as a strong and independent woman instead of the typical damsel-in-distress. She is one of the earliest examples of a strong female character in English literature.

Robin Hood

Robin Hood has been a part of British folklore since the 13th century. The legend of the skilled archer who was known to steal from the rich to give to the poor has been passed down through generations.

Hood's accomplices, the 'Merry Men' included Little John, Will Scarlett, Friar Tuck, Much and Maid Marian. They were said to have lived together in Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham.

Robin Hood has been portrayed in numerous books, television series and over 100 films. Depictions of him have varied over time, with him being shows as a peasant or a nobleman.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark.

· ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 100 POUNDS

Reverse

The reverse was also designed by Jody Clark. It portrays Maid Marian standing in the greenery of Sherwood Forest with a bow and quiver of arrows on her back. The text reads:

 MAID MARIAN · 1OZ · FINE GOLD · 999.9 · 2022
