The 2022 Platinum Jubilee Five Sovereign Piece is the largest coin in the 2022 Platinum Jubilee sovereign range.
Issued by the Royal Mint, these quintuple sovereigns are struck to a brilliant uncirculated finish. In celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee, the coins feature a special Royal Coat of Arms design by Timothy Noad.
The quintuple sovereign weighs 39.94g and is struck from 22 carat gold (0.9167 fineness). Each coin contains 1.1771 troy ounces of the precious metal.
The British Royal Coat of Arms is unique to each monarch. It consists of a crest, motto and shield, with two 'supporters' on each side. Queen Elizabeth II's coat of arms features the quartered shield of the United Kingdom, surmounted by a royal crown. The motto reads "Dieu et mon droit", meaning "God on my right".
The shield dates to the 1707 Act of Union and symbolises the alliance of the four Great British nations. The shield displays the three passant lions for England, the rampant lion for Scotland, the three lions for Wales and the golden harp for Northern Ireland. The supporters of the shield are a golden lion and a silver unicorn.
In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II reached 70 years in service. This milestone event was celebrated across the Commonwealth Nations.
We first heard about this coin from a Privy Council Notice. The Privy Council is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to the Privy Council for approval and that information is then announced on the Privy Council website.
The obverse shows the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscription reads:
"· ELIZABETH II · DEI · GRA · REGINA · FID · DEF ·"
Designed by Timothy Noad, the reverse features a depiction of the Royal Coat of Arms. The arms feature the quartered shield of the United Kingdom, surmounted by a royal crown, topped by a golden lion. The date appears at the bottom.
